Band 5/6 Ophthalmic Nurse

Role: Band 5/6 Ophthalmic Nurse (RGN) – Eye ED

Hospital: Southmead Hospital (may also be required at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust sites)

Contract Type: Agency / Temporary

Start Date: ASAP

Duration: 4–8 weeks (with possible extension)

Working Pattern: 7-day rota

Shift Times:

• Early Shift: 07:45 – 16:30
• Late Shift: 09:15 – 18:00
• Pay Rate: £21 – £30 per hour (depending on experience)

Role Summary

We are looking for an experienced Band 5/6 Ophthalmic Nurse (RGN) to join the Eye Emergency Department (Eye ED) at Southmead Hospital. This is a dynamic clinical setting dealing with urgent ophthalmic presentations, with occasional cross-site support required within UHBW services.

Key Duties

• Triage and assess ophthalmic emergency patients
• Deliver safe and effective nursing care in Eye ED
• Assist with urgent eye examinations and treatments
• Collaborate with ophthalmology and ED multidisciplinary teams
• Ensure accurate and timely clinical documentation
• Maintain high standards of patient-centred care

Essential Requirements

• Active NMC registration (RGN)
• Previous experience in ophthalmic or emergency care preferred
• Ability to work across a 7-day rotating shift pattern
• Strong clinical judgement and assessment skills
• Confident working in a busy emergency environment
